Today, Azerbaijan celebrates the Restoration of Independence Day. On October 18, 1991, the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan adopted the Constitutional Act “On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.” The Constitutional Act refers to the Declaration of Independence of May 28, 1918, and the Declaration “On the Restoration of State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan” by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan on August 30, 1991, establishing that the Republic of Azerbaijan is the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

This year, on October 18, Azerbaijan marks the 33rd anniversary of the restoration of its independence. The Azerbaijani people established an independent republic at the beginning of the last century and restored their independence in 1991 as the successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Since 1991, the Azerbaijani people have celebrated this holiday for the fourth time as a victorious nation that has restored its territorial integrity.

In May 1992, the National Assembly adopted the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan (music by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, lyrics by Ahmad Javad), and shortly thereafter, the tricolor flag and the state emblem featuring an eight-pointed star with a flame were approved.

At the plenary session of the Azerbaijani parliament on October 15, 2021, a new law “On Independence Day” was adopted. On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev approved the law “On Independence Day.” With the approval of this law, October 18 – State Independence Day was renamed Restoration of Independence Day.
