The Senior World Judo Championship has started in Budapest, Hungary. The tournament brought together 782 fighters (482 men, 312 women) from 39 countries and the national team includes 17 judo fighters (9 men and 8 women).The judoka of the national team and “Neftchi Sports Club” Orkhan Safarov has successfully started the competition. Safarov (60 kg) joined the match from the second stage. During his first contest, he has won Janislav Gerchev (Bulgaria); he has followed this up and booked a spot in the quarter finals by stunning Goncalo Mansinho (Portugal) by Ippon. He has also defeated Kazakh world and Asia champion, silver medalist of the Rio 2016 Olympics, Yeldos Smetov in the 1/4 finals and qualified for the semi-final. Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallist, Diyorbek Urozboev (Uzbekistan) has stood opposite Safarov during the semi-finals and Safarov won the opponent by Ippon and qualified for the final.In the final, Azerbaijani judo fighter has claimed silver medal at the World Championship in Budapest, Hungary after losing to Japanese Naohisa Takato.Notably, Azerbaijani female judokas, 48 kg, Leyla Aliyeva and Erdenebat Bazarragchaa has lost at the first fight and stopped competing.
